Quick Fact:

Managers Make the Difference

In recent years, work-life research, done in a variety of settings, has consistently shown that a supportive manager is more valued by employees than anything else the organization can offer. Findings from a large-scale analysis of employee survey data noted, "We discovered that the manager - not pay, benefits, perks or a charismatic corporate leader - was the critical player in building a strong workplace. The manager was key."

As many management experts are now asserting, this data suggests that if organizations take steps to entrench a "supportive manager" concept in their corporate environments, and if they help managers to develop the appropriate people skills to make this happen, the payoff, in terms of performance and retention of key talent, will be significant.

Week 2: Authentic Leadership: Starting with the self

“The best managers don’t manage people - they manage themselves”
Authentic Leadership Conference, October 28th, 2008

As a manager and leader, people are watching you and often following your lead, literally. If staff see you take a lunch break, they are more likely to feel that there own breaks are supported. If staff see you actively manage stress, for example through setting boundaries and limits, they are more likely to model these healthy behaviours too.

Leaders are busy people juggling multiple responsibilities all at once. You might not often have the opportunity to reflect on your own self-care habits personally or professionally. Time for reflection and increased self-awareness is an essential element of leading for wellness. This week our time together is dedicated to your self-assessments (a self-care assessment tool will be provided in advance of the group coaching call)

Review self-care assessments and create action plans for results

Week 3: Your Leadership Style

  • Briefly review different styles of leadership including: transformational leadership, transactional leadership, conscious leadership, authentic leadership, and servant leadership
  • Choosing your style for leading and inspiring wellness
  • Strengths and opportunities for growth

Week 4: Wellness in Action

As a manager there are five powerful actions that help you increase employee well-being and positively contribute to the culture of wellness within your workplace:

  • Support
  • Feedback
  • Listening
  • Role modeling
  • Addressing stress issues

Week 5: Infusing Wellness into Your Team and Workplace

Increasing the culture of wellness within your workplace and working group is a win-win. Employees feel better, are more engaged, less stressed and more productive – generally speaking more satisfied and fulfilled within their work (note: a fulfilled employee is a retained employee). This makes your job as a manager and a leader easier.

Creating messages that infuse wellness – are ultimately messages that support staff to take responsibility for caring for themselves and one another - including managing stress in a proactive and healthy way.

What are ways to infuse wellness into your working group and organization?
