Learning to decode on the letter-level is an inevitable process for a student to become a successful reader, but many phonics books are either designed for children or for illiterate adult native speakers, not for adult ESL students. Sophie Wang was inspired by one of her adult ESL students to develop phonics materials for ESL learners with practical, useful content for everyday English. This is an important distinction; the vocabulary which interests adult ESL learners is different from early education students because of their needs and motivation. A five-year old may be interested in learning pony not Private Parking, but an adult ESL driver may eagerly want to learn Private Parking - especially if they have been ticketed or towed!
